About Me

I'm Alida Frey

I grew up in Northern Virginia, where my parents, former dancers, had a lot of modern dance photography and art on the walls. I loved looking at the composition in the photos, the lines the bodies made. We went to the ballet, art museums. I spent my summers at a girls camp in the Adirondack’s of upstate New York.

My summers at camp spawned my passion for the magic of the wilderness and the idea of the feral female. I loved mysterious tales of wayward women, or a band girlfriends that looses themselves in the woods, becoming more wild and bonded to one another each day they are lost.

I studied painting at Boston University, and abroad in Venice, Italy. After graduating I moved to Brooklyn, NY where I continued to paint. In 2011 an Artists residency at the Pajama Factory brought me to Williamsport, PA. I continued painting at the PJ Factory until the allure of the west coast took over and I moved to Santa Cruz, California. There I opened a small studio/gallery in Felton called Harlequin Dime and I quickly fell deeply in love with the mountains and backwoods of Northern California. Today I live and paint in the foothills of the Sierras, on a forested hill, next to the American River.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

Inspiration:

I am inspired by the landscape around me, places I’ve traveled to but more so places I’ve lived. l love knowing the view of the valley from the top of the hill above my house, the path through the woods where I walk my dogs every day, that one cedar tree that bends just so. I am inspired by the idea of the feral female who both surrenders to and dominates the wild, the idea that the magic of the wilderness could capture one’s psyche and free it from itself, or the civilized world, or Sunday school. I like exploring contradictions between eroticism and innocence, ecstasy and melancholy, fantasy and reality, the individual and every woman. I love 17th century depictions of Mary Magdalene in ecstasy, soft female figures by Bouguereau, Wangechi Mutu’s depictions of female forms in collage, the gritty figures of Egon Schiele, photos of brothels and hookers from the old West, Lisa Yuscavage’s mysterious ladies, and Henry Darger’s illustrated tale of a child slave rebellion. I am inspired by our relationships with animals, soil, food. I have Great Danes who inspire me every day to live in the moment and run around in the woods.

Techniques:

I make paintings mostly in oil on canvas primed with acrylic gesso. I use poppy and walnut oil and turpentine. As I learned to paint in watercolor, I like applying watercolor techniques with oil paint. Sometimes I work with several layers of glazes on top of a monochromatic ground. Other times I use very little paint on the surface of the canvas.
